My Children want to help a needy family this Christmas. Although I agreed, I find that we ourselves are a bit tight. So how can we who are barely scooching by help another family. When we talked to dad about he he kidded and said "we are the needy family"...later that evening my daughter asked me what dad meant. She said " How can we be so needy that we cant help another family?" Good question...If we were to truly look at our situation..we are not in need of anything....We have food, shelter and clothing. We have the means to make a lovely gift for each child ...Of course I knew dad was teasing when he said we are a needy family and he would welcome the chance to help another family... but his remark opened the door way to discussion...the children remembered Bible stories they learned that support their point...the widows mite..she gave it all, the women who was blessed with oil and flour over flowing...the Bible is filled with stories of people giving from what they have..sharing with strangers and none of this came at a cost of feeding their own families....I remember a story being told many years ago by our youth leader and his wife....When they were young and barley scratching by. They heard a knock on their back door. ( this was before everyone had to have a fence lol) A gentle man..down on his luck asked for a hand out..he had broke down and had no money for gas to get home....The couple shook their head and sent him off. When they shut the door the wife said, We have $5. What can that help and it is our last $5. But both felt ashamed and convicted. So the husband went back to the back yard to offer the man the $5..but the man was gone..they looked up and down the street..asked neighbors if they had seen him and no one new what they wee talking about...no one saw this man. The wife asked how he can just disappear like that..there was really no where for him to go..they should have been able to see him in any direction..feeling better that they at least tried...they sat down for quiet Bible time...each in their own chair..quietly searching scripture. After a few minutes they both looked up at each other..both have opened up to the same verse..Mathew 25:42." for I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invited me in, I needed clothes and you did not closed me, I was sick and and in prison you did not looked after me. " To this day both are convinced that the man was an angel..and they failed the test....they may never know
When we focus on what we do not have....we miss what do we have...enough. blessings.
