How Bottle jaw works...a better explanation:
A patient friend, whom I respect, took time to explain in a clear, understandable way....here is what she shared...based on her training and knowledge..
"Let's start with Barber Pole... They do not "suck" on the goats intestines, they aren't sitting there on a hole feeding like a leech. They have a single hook like tooth. They live in the mucus layer of the intestines. Using that hook like tooth, they gouge tiny scratches in the wall of the intestine and feed on the blood cells that come out, like a Vampire Bat who bites a hole and licks up the blood.
Now BP lay eggs in great numbers so, when you have 100,000 worms licking up 100,000 blood cells, even if they only eat 10 a feeding that's a million blood cells and they forage constantly. As they feed, the blood volume goes down and the blood pressure starts to drop. The animals body responds by adding normal serum from other parts of the body to raise the blood pressure. This is the beginning of Anemia.
As more blood cells are foraged, more serum is added. The higher the amount of serum, the worse the Anemia gets. Eventually it gets to where there are too few red blood cells to effectively distribute oxygen throughout the body.
At this point the body begins to choose what it is going keep running properly. It's choice is always the brain. The normal fluid starts to collect under the skin where the blood vessels have allowed it to leak out allowing better oxygen content to the brain.
Now, it does move back and forth under the skin but, also the lymph nodes are trying to clean it up as well. The body starts getting weak from lack of oxygen and we all know the rest..."
we have had Bottle Jaw with no anemia..here is explanation thought answered by the same gal...
"It's my understanding that the fluid build up is caused by leaky blood vessels or lymph nodes. The blood vessels weaken when there is lack of iron in the blood. The lymph nodes leak when they are being overworked. In this case more that likely it is excess lymph fluid from the over worked nodes response to the worms moving through the lungs, being cough up, and swallowed by your girls.
Be sure to discuss this with your vet...
To treat bottle jaw you need to address the anemia...please go to the anemia file for protocol.
